Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Minars.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
I am, Charles Minars, the head instructor of C.O.B.R.A. Self Defense Lexington KY. I have a Masters degree in Science and graduated from the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School and then served in the Western Pacific Fleet (U.S.S. Nimitz CVN-68 and U.S.S. Frank Cable AS-40) for almost 12 years as a nuclear technician. After leaving naval service, I moved to Keene, KY, where I have resided for the last 20 years.
Since the early 80’s, I enjoying studying martial arts such as Aikido, Kenjutsu, and Karate. I credit most of my life’s successes to the mental and physical discipline that life in the dojo gave me. However, throughout my life, I have sought 2 important things in the Martial Arts that often times were lacking or at least not focused upon: Self Defense and being able to prevent people from being victims of violent crimes.
That journey eventually lead me to meet Chris Sutton, the founder of C.O.B.R.A. Self Defense Systems International. He had pioneered this program of real world self defense training known as C.O.B.R.A. based on his real life experiences in law enforcement and department of corrections and has been making headlines worldwide since 2002.
After personally training with Chris Sutton, I was tasked to open a branch of C.O.B.R.A. in Lexington KY. We serve Lexington and surrounding areas and are on a mission of improving awareness, safety and empowering people over violent crime. We are available to train in Lexington or travel to you to train.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
Regardless of your knowledge and specialty, starting a business and making it a success can be a daunting task. There are so many little details to master accounting, marketing, blogging, getting a website and webstore up and running, even just getting the proper legal paperwork filed, and so on. The largest challenge to me, however, is in overcoming a lifetime of being shy and introverted. I’m not a natural public speaker, to say the least. You have to look in the mirror every day and tell yourself to get out there an meet people. You know that what you have to teach them can literally save their life, but they don’t know that yet, so you have to get out there and tell them. That can be difficult when you aren’t used to that amount of social interaction. And, of course, even if you have something that literally everyone needs, that doesn’t mean that they will recognize that, so you have to get used to rejection as well. I have a good support network though. The executive coaches and other C.O.B.R.A. instructors are awesome resources and such a great help and motivation. We all keep each other moving in the right direction. The result is knowing that you help a lot of people. We are especially proud of the strides we are making globally in our Child Abduction Protection program as we continuously move towards a goal of making 1 million children safer from violent predators. That’s powerful motivation.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
I empower people to survive the worst day of their lives. C.O.B.R.A. is not a martial art. It stands for Combat Objective Battle Ready Applications and it was specifically designed by a career law enforcement officer based on his personal experiences working community law enforcement, interviewing 1000’s of crime victims and working in a maximum security prison with the worst of violent criminals. C.O.B.R.A. is law enforcement sourced reality based tactical self defense scenario training.
Our premier program for the public is the 10 Day Self Defense Academy, often referred to as “Police Academy for Civilians”, because they learn using the same methods and most of the same things as the police do. The programs that we are most proud of are the Child Abduction Protection program, Teen Safe, and Anti-Bully programs. We are the global experts in those areas.
Why should someone come to us? It is simple. We are the acknowledged experts in the safety awareness and self defense industry. We have been in operation since 2002 and are in 25 countries and, quite simply put, we offer training that no one else has the expertise in. Law enforcement knows real self defense. Everyone else simply theorizes about it. Who would you train with?
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
Look in the mirror everyday. Ask yourself one simple question. Is what I am trying to do the right and honest thing and does it have value? If the answer is yes, then other people are going to see that and they will support you. If you know what you do has value, you won’t have a problem asking people money for it, because you know you are returning something of equal or greater value to them. Be honest, work hard and never give up on your dreams. If you are working for someone else, give them the very same quality of work that you would do for your own self and company. Always under promise and over deliver. Most importantly, be a humble person. We all put our pants on the same way. Ego is the enemy of intelligence. Be determined, because life is often about risking everything for a dream that no one else can see, but you. I learned mental toughness in both martial arts training and especially in Nuclear Power School and serving in the U.S. Navy. Being mentally tough is one of the most important ingredients to success. The mind is one of our most important muscles. Keep it strong. It will serve you well. Lastly, I would like to say: Only a man who knows what it feels to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win.
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
Success to me means that when I come home at night and look in the mirror that I have done everything in my power to make this world a better place, helped people, and know that I’ve done an honest day’s work. The measure of a man’s existence, ultimately, is in how many people he has touched and helped though out his life. In business, the immediate goal is obviously to make money, but money isn’t what creates happiness. What creates happiness is knowing that what you did to earn that money was helping a lot of people and providing them with something that they needed but did not have before they met you. That is success. With C.O.B.R.A. I can teach people to have an insurance policy on their life. Self Defense is something that we may never need, we hope we never need, but if we need it, nothing else will do. It’s like learning to swim. We don’t expect to ever be in a position to drown, but if we didn’t learn, it’s too late if we are drowning. So, I spend my life spreading the word to people that they need to get trained in self defense and they need to do it before they need it. It’s a real sense of accomplishment when they listen and I can teach them life saving skills. In my book, that is success. It can be very rewarding in that way.
What’s next for you?
I want to continue building my business, helping to spread the word about C.O.B.R.A. and help a lot more people. I want to have a positive influence on people and improve their lives for having met me. Globally, we have set a goal to train 1 million children life saving skills through the Child Abduction Protection program and Teen Safe. That’s a big motivator. But, I also want to continue training adults through the 10 week academy. I’m also looking forward to expand my course offerings with Kickboxing for Fitness and C.O.B.R.A. Fighting Systems in the near future. I also am planning to continue pushing into the corporate training segment to get employees trained in dealing with Active Threat incidents. There is a lot that can be done to minimize the casualties in these scenarios. It’s just a matter of getting everyone on the same page with a good plan. I am the expert in safety awareness and self defense in my area. I just need to keep getting the word out there, so that more people will seek that training. Training saves Lives. That is what I am all about.
